During the official visit to the Russian Federation, Prime Minister Janez Janša today met the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. On this occasion, he informed him that the largest ever delegation of representatives of the economic sector abroad had accompanied him to Moscow this time and emphasised that there were great possibilities for strengthening relations between the two countries in all areas. In addition, he informed President Putin about the preparations for the 90th anniversary of the Russian chapel under Vršič and expressed his gratitude for the announced participation of the presidential regiment at this year's celebration.
President Vladimir Putin agreed with the statement that there were many possibilities open for economic cooperation between the countries and stressed the interest of the Russian economic sector in investing in Slovenia. The two statesmen also agreed that Slovenia's future Presidency of the European Union could in many ways enhance further intensification of cooperation between the Russian Federation and the European Union. Furthermore, they exchanged their views on the situation in the Western Balkans and, with regard to this, both supported a search for solutions that could contribute to continued improvement of stability in the entire region.
In the opinion of Slovenia's Prime Minister expressed after the meeting with his host, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Fradkov, economic cooperation was given special attention during the official visit. The official delegation of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia certainly consisted of the largest ever business delegation, numbering as many as 133 representatives of Slovene companies. The Prime Minister explained that the two countries practically achieved the targeted trade figure of USD 1 billion last year. The two delegations agreed that that figure should be increased in the coming years. "By signing seven bilateral acts, we have also improved the legislative framework of our cooperation", the Prime Minister said and added that during the visit a round table "Historical foundations and prospects of Slovenian-Russian relations" had been organized, which had improved the general knowledge of past bonds and potential for cooperation between Slovenia and Russia by the public.

Slovenia's Prime Minister informed the hosts of Slovenia's plans within the Forum of Slavic Cultures, which provides a good opportunity to strengthen cooperation among Slavic countries in the field of culture. He also spoke about the preparations for the 90th anniversary of the tragic accident in which several hundreds of Russian prisoners of war were buried under a snow avalanche. The commemorative event will take place at the Russian chapel under Vršič at the end of July. He emphasized that the Russian chapel today symbolizes the bond between the two nations.
"Relations with the Russian Federation are of strategic importance for Slovenia, so they will be given even more attention in the future. Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the European Union is also of strategic importance and constitutes the basis for good relations on the European continent in the future. Europe cannot be successful without a strategic partnership with the Russian Federation. It is in this context that we see part of a positive European future, for which we will strive during Slovenia's Presidency of the EU", asserted Prime Minister Janez Janša.

Early in the morning, Slovenia's Prime Minister met with the Speaker of the State Duma, Boris Gryzlov. They estimated bilateral relations as excellent and stated that continuous political dialogue at the highest level greatly contributes to the development of good mutual relations. They also agreed about the good cooperation between the Slovenian and Russian parliaments. There is a regular exchange of visits of parliamentary delegations. Prime Minister Janez Janša also stressed the importance for interparliamentary cooperation, of the annual meetings of parliamentarians at the commemorative events at the Russian chapel.
