In his speech, the Slovenian PM stressed the optimism that can be felt across Europe. This is very important for Slovenia, particularly as it brightens the prospect of the coming Presidency, while it also enables the EU to more effectively address the challenges of both future enlargement and stronger collaboration.
According to the PM, Slovenia has come close to realising the historic goal of a free Europe, united in peace. However, work remains to be done, as there are still nations seeking to join the Union. Mr Janša stressed the significance of further enlargement to the Western Balkans – one of the priorities of Slovenia's Presidency – and enhancing the EU's engagement in its neighbourhood. He also pointed out Slovenia's other Presidency priorities, such as the Lisbon Strategy, energy policy and inter-cultural dialogue.
The PM said that an EU with a stronger institutional capacity must offer a new story and a new vision, adding that Europe must become a global player and an innovative force advancing the modernisation of the global community.
