The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Alenka Bratušek, today attended a memorial ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the 1st Congress of the Slovenian Anti-Fascist Women’s Association, held in the village of Dobrnič. In her address, she stressed that 70 years ago, a loud and firm ′no′ had resonated through this place. It was a ′no′ to the ideology that fuelled the rise of Nazism and Fascism, and which not only took it for granted that the world was based on inequality, but also promoted the idea of ′superior′ and ′inferior′ human races.

In her address, Ms Bratušek also referred to the fight for equality between men and women: "The fight for gender equality has always kept in step with aspirations for continuing democratisation, something every free, open and democratic society should strive for. The issue of social order, namely relations between individuals in society, should never be considered ultimately dealt with as this would mean that we have run out of answers and ideas of how to make the world a better place and that we do not want to concern ourselves with any further questions."

At the close of her address, Ms Bratušek also touched on the current political situation: “You have often heard me say that our anti-crisis measures are not designed to convince Brussels, but are intended for ourselves.  With these measures, we have demonstrated that our future is in our hands. We are doing so for our own sake – so that our children and we will live in the best possible world."
