Agreement reached on the President of the European Council and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy at the special meeting of the European Council
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Alenka Bratušek, attended a meeting of the European Council in Brussels, which focused on appointing the new President of the European Council and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The jobs went to the current Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and the Italian foreign minister, Federica Mogherini, respectively. At the press conference after the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed that both names were confirmed quickly and unanimously.
EU leaders also discussed the situation in international crisis hotspots. Regarding the situation in Ukraine, they adopted a conclusion that the European Union was prepared to take further steps, and authorised the European Commission to prepare the measures.
“We also talked about the economic situation in Europe. At the beginning of October, a conference on economic growth and employment, particularly youth employment, is to be held in Rome. The situation in the EU is still worrying, despite improvements on the financial markets. This time, Slovenia is a positive exception. Based on the data presented a few days ago, all indicators are positive, even compared to other members of the euro area,” said the PM, adding that the measures implemented by her Government in last 18 months were clearly the right ones. She wished her successor to continue on this path.
