The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Alenka Bratušek, attended the 23rd statistical conference entitled the 2013 Statistical Day. In her opening address, she said: "Our national statistics provide a picture of Slovenia, its inhabitants, business entities and the environment. We might not always like this picture. But ignoring reality will not do us any good either."

Negative trends in recent years affected the lives of nearly all Slovenians, the Prime Minister added, therefore it should come as no surprise to see people upset about these and many other data on the quality of living.

The Prime Minister stressed that statistics also make it possible to draw comparisons between Slovenia and other countries: "Statistics become even more important when we compare Slovenia to other EU Member States and examine the attained level of development in Slovenia in terms of the objectives of the common European policies. For the purposes of such comparative analyses, however, the methodologies must be harmonised and recognised international statistical standards integrated into the national statistics. It is a well-known fact that in some areas Slovenia's statistics is on a par with the leading national statistics in the world."

At the close of her address, the Prime Minister expressed her expectation that the exchange of opinions and information would greatly improve the partnership between businesses and the official statistics, and extended sincere congratulations to the recipients of the awards of the Statistical Society of Slovenia on their professional success.
