Conclusion of the two-day European Council meeting
A two-day European Council meeting came to a conclusion today in Brussels. The meeting was also attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Alenka Bratušek. At today's session, the European leaders discussed mainly on the progress made in the strengthening of the European Economic and Monetary Union and certain aspects of the European Union's foreign policy. On the margins of the meeting, the Slovenian Prime Minister met with the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, and the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso.
In her statement to the press after the meeting, the Prime Minister said that the key topic of the meeting was unemployment among young people and expressed her satisfaction that the outcome of the meeting was successful provision of funds for employing young people, including for Slovenia. According to preliminary estimates, the region of Eastern Slovenia will be entitled to approximately EUR 9 million over the next two years. The Prime Minister added that European cohesion policy funds from the European Social Fund could also be used to address the problem of young adult unemployment within the 2014-2020 financial framework.
The Prime Minister went on by saying that, during today's session, the European leaders had been brought up to speed on the progress made in the strengthening of the European Economic and Monetary Union and concluded that tangible progress had been made in establishing a banking union during the previous month. This topic will be again the subject of the European Council's October meeting. The Prime Minister added that the EU heads of State and Government concluded the meeting by welcoming Croatia to the European Union.
