Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša to attend the 9th Asia – Europe Meeting Summit
The Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Janša, will attend the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit (ASEM) hosted by Vientiane, Laos, on 5 – 6 November 2012 under the theme "Friends for Peace, Partners for Prosperity".
This is a meeting between two regions representing almost two thirds of the world's population and more than one half of the world's GDP. Their cooperation facilitates the creation of favourable conditions for a sustainable global development and the provision of peace and stability. In the light of the focal theme of the event, the Heads of State and Government of ASEM partner countries will discuss the enhancement of economic cooperation, global and regional issues and the strengthening of partnership and future cooperation within ASEM.
Within the set of plenary sessions, the Slovenian Prime Minister is expected to elaborate on global challenges and economic and financial issues. Tackling the first topic, he will present a strategy aimed at strengthening the mechanisms to prevent genocide and other mass atrocities, an initiative which Prime Minister Janša officially presented at the recent UN General Assembly meeting in New York. While discussing economic and financial issues, Mr Janša will outline Slovenia's views and efforts in combating the financial and economic crisis, and the opportunities for enhanced cooperation between the two regions, especially within the framework of Slovenia's strategic position in entering the markets of Central and South East Europe.
On the margins of the event, the Slovenian Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders of some Asian countries.
