"If anyone deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, it is Father Pedro Opeka for his many years of charity work in one of the poorest regions of the world where he works with those who need such and similar humanitarian aid the most," said the Prime Minister after today’s Government session where cabinet ministers discussed the nomination of Pedro Opeka for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"In the last few months, a wide campaign at different levels has been going on in Slovenia and abroad, and an impressive amount of support has been garnered," said the Prime Minister, adding that supporters abroad include several presidents and representatives of esteemed international institutions from Europe, Africa and other continents.

"I am particularly glad that there has been great unity about this in Slovenia on this occasion," said the Prime Minister, explaining that many high-profile individuals from political, cultural and scientific walks of life have signed a petition in support of the nomination, including the President of Slovenia, numerous deputies from different parties, Slovenian MEPs and many others. "This nomination has good chances of success and we believe in it," stressed Prime Minister Janez Janša.
