Mr Pahor added that this was an extremely important time for the Council of Europe, since it was celebrating its 60th anniversary while also undergoing a period of important structural reform aimed at transforming the organisation. In this respect, Secretary General Jagland highlighted, in particular, Slovenia’s efforts during the Slovenian EU Council Presidency to further adapt the Council of Europe to the current international situation, and commended Slovenia on achievements during its chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Mr Pahor and Mr Jagland touched on several other topical issues regarding relations between the Council of Europe and Russia, and relations between the Council of Europe and other international organisations, focusing especially on co-operation with the European Union. Secretary General Jagland also took the opportunity to congratulate Prime Minister Pahor on the recent signing of the Arbitration Agreement between the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Croatia.
