Prime Minister emphasises opportunity to bring discussion on

Today, the Slovenian Prime Minister, Borut Pahor, referred the proposal for the Act amending the Victims of War Violence Act to the presidents of the parliamentary parties. For the purpose of establishing whether the proposed act represents a sufficiently solid basis to allow consultations of party presidents and heads of deputy groups and to facilitate possible corrections or amendments, and to eventually establish whether it enjoys common support, Mr Pahor asked the presidents of the parties to review the act and commuicate their views.

According to the Prime Minister's letter, parliamentary parties came to a significant decision in 2005 that "war laws" should, if possible, be discussed at a round table and brought into parliamentary procedure with consent. "Being aware of the sensitive nature of the issue of our not so distant history, which continued to divide us long after the democratic change and the establishment of an independent state, it was in the past four years that we managed for the first time not to abuse this issue for inciting political conflict and hatred. That was a significant achievement," Prime Minister Pahor wrote.

"I think that we have an opportunity in this term of office to upgrade these efforts and with joint forces close the discussion on so-called war laws by consent or by broad majority support in the National Assembly. Such an unprecedented event would have real and symbolic effects," Mr Pahor emphasised, expressing his belief in the maturity of the Slovenian political environment and the success of this important project.
