The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today met Li Changchun, member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China.   In the opening address, both politicians assessed bilateral relations as good. There are no open issues between Slovenia and China and both countries consider each other as friends. They agreed that cooperation between the two countries can be strengthened both in the fields of economy and culture.

Prime Minister Pahor said that Slovenia was a small country but with a great potential.  Opportunities for an extensive economic cooperation seem open particularly in the field of logistics and large-scale infrastructural projects. In addition, it is necessary to benefit from the opportunities of direct foreign investments by Chinese companies in Slovenia and vice versa. In this connection, the Slovenian Prime Minister called attention to the role and close ties Slovenia has with the Western Balkans countries. Li Changchun pointed out the importance of close cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the light of austere economic conditions in the world. Cooperation needs to be strengthened and raised to a new level. On the occasion of the upcoming 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Mr Li Changchun announced that China intended to organise a visit of a group of Slovenian students to China. In addition, he proposed organisation of joint cultural events, both in China and Slovenia, to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. In the context of reinforced cultural cooperation, the People’s Republic of China wishes to make a donation of 50,000 pieces of Chinese literature to the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana with a view to helping Slovenian students improve their knowledge on the Chinese culture and history.
