Prime Minister Pahor at the 23rd extraordinary session of the National Assembly on calling a referendum on the Act Ratifying the Arbitration Agreement

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today attended the 23rd extraordinary session of the National Assembly where the deputies discussed the proposed Ordinance on Calling a Legislative Referendum on the Act Ratifying the Arbitration Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Slovenia and the Government of the Republic of Croatia.

“This Agreement will protect the vital interests of the Republic of Slovenia, since postponing a solution implies that there will be no new solution for quite some time,” stressed the Prime Minister in his address to the deputies in the National Assembly. We have a guarantee for Slovenia’s junction to the high sea enshrined in Article 3 and it is the task of the Arbitral Tribunal to define Slovenia’s contact with the high sea.”

Prime Minister Pahor concluded by saying that Slovenia’s biggest mistake would be to refuse a good agreement, trigger political conflicts and tarnish Slovenia’s reputation. “This is our chance – and these are rare – to vote FOR the agreement that brings a fair solution for border delimitation, eliminates old problems and enhances Slovenia’s reputation and influence.” In his opinion, the approval of the Arbitration Agreement would protect Slovenia’s vital interests, improve our relations with Croatia, strengthen our influence in the region and earn Slovenia a reputation for solving the most difficult problems in an amicable manner, thus helping Slovenia become again a role model for the countries in the region.
