Prime Minister Pahor receives NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today received NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen with whom he discussed topical issues of the Alliance. They particularly focused on the security situation in Afghanistan. Mr Pahor and Mr Rasmussen agreed that the Alliance requires a new approach to the implementation of a strategy defining NATO's fundamental task to prepare Afghanistan armed forces to assume responsibility for ensuring peace, stability and security in the country.

At the press conference after the meeting, Prime Minister Pahor pointed out the necessity for legitimacy of the new Afghan government, which must strengthen its fight against corruption and win the confidence of the Afghan people. Meeting expectations of the international community regarding the progress of the Afghan people is imperative for the government, or else one cannot expect foreign soldiers in Afghanistan to enjoy the necessary legitimacy. "An increase in the number of troops alone without reaching the required level of legitimacy will not ensure success," concluded Prime Minister Pahor.
