Prime Minister Borut Pahor meets the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Slovenia

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today met the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Slovenia, Peran Bošković. The meeting was part of a series of first meetings of the Prime Minister with religious communities; in recent weeks, Mr Pahor has met with senior representatives of the Roman Catholic Church and the Islamic community.

In a statement after the meeting, both said they were pleased that the meeting had been organised. "This marks the start of a new co-operation between the government and religious communities, based on the constitutional principle of separation between the state and religious organisations. We are all making every effort to solve practical issues in a practical manner; as regards other issues, we will take time to consider them," said the Slovenian Prime Minister, adding that he hoped that any problems would be addressed in a spirit of mutual co-operation.

Mr Bošković welcomed the willingness of the Slovenian Government, and especially of Prime Minister Pahor, to learn about the activities of the Orthodox religious community and the problems encountered by it. "This is a positive step and we believe that we are on the right road to develop a positive and co-operative atmosphere," he added.

Today’s meeting will be followed in the coming weeks by a meeting between the Prime Minister and representatives of the Evangelical community in Slovenia.
