Prime Minister Borut Pahor: European Union is prepared to assume responsibility for fighting climate change

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, will attend the European Council meeting in Brussels today and tomorrow, where attention will be focused on adoption of the energy and climate change package. The European leaders will also discuss the Lisbon Treaty ratification process and fight against financial and economic crisis.  “If the European Union does not assume responsibility to fight climate change, a bleak future awaits our children.  We are willing to take on this responsibility,” asserted Prime Minister Pahor on the margins of the meeting.

“One option would be to accept the European Commission’s proposal, which is good and acceptable for Slovenia and with which the European Union sends a clear message that it considers measures to tackle climate change a priority. But we can also opt for a lengthy and unpredictable debate until the small hours without knowing what the final compromise will be. However, as a former MEP, I know that a poor compromise will not be supported by the European Parliament, which expects a crystal clear message that Europe intends to play its role in combating climate change,” commented the Slovenian Prime Minister on the most difficult negotiations at this session.

Following Thursday’s discussions on three main topics, the European Council will continue its work on Friday when conclusions are to be adopted.
