Prime Minister's press conference

“The Government has decided to accelerate the adoption of all measures which are important for regulating financial and economic uncertainty,” said the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, in the beginning of the press conference following the government session. In the light of this, ministers today discussed the proposed decree on criteria and conditions for granting loans under Article 81a of the Public Finance Act. The Prime Minister explained that on the basis of an agreement with the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, the proposed decree would be discussed by the competent parliamentary working body prior to its final adoption by the Government.

The Government today also defined the starting points for participation of the expert public in the appointment of the state representatives on boards of companies, whose (co)owner is the state, and public commercial institutions. “This is a major change.  We are introducing a more transparent system which will provide an opportunity for top-notch candidates. In this way, they will be given a chance to work on behalf of their state regardless of their potential political or any other differences,” added the Prime Minister.

 

At today's session, the Government also adopted a resolution on the appointment of a working group for finding a suitable solution for Falcon 2000EX aircraft following the expiry of its lease contract.  Potential solutions to this issue would be presented to the general public prior to making a final decision, stressed the Slovenian Prime Minister. He went on to assure that “the Government will decide for the most economic solution,” and that the opinions of the expert and other publics would be taken into account. 

 

The Government will soon prepare a package of savings measures based on the principle that all budget users renounce any comfort which is not essential for the performance of their function.

The Prime Minister said that today the Government had been briefed about the intention to end the participation of the Republic of Slovenia in NATO’s mission in Iraq. “We opted for a procedure which is not obligatory but permitted, since we believe that more people should participate in the discussion before the final adoption of a decision.  The resolution will be adopted by the Government but the two competent parliamentary committees will debate this intention beforehand,” added Prime Minister Pahor.

 

“We wish to have an advisory body which will be composed of highly competent experts from the academic arena and the real world, and which will assist the Government in decision-making aimed at successful regulation of financial and economic uncertainty,” commented the Prime Minister on the establishment of the Strategic Economic Council presented to the Government today.

 

The ministers adopted a recommendation addressed to the managers of companies whose (co)owner is the Republic of Slovenia to renounce any bonuses at the end of this year.  “In view of the unfavourable circumstances, any action to the contrary would be financially and symbolically unacceptable,” pointed out Mr Pahor.
