Prime Minister Janez Janša receives Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia and President of the European Council, Mr Janez Janša, today received the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, Mr Yona Metzger, who is currently visiting Slovenia. Mr Janša stressed the importance of Jewish culture for Europe and informed his guest that 27 January would soon officially be declared Holocaust Memorial Day by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.

PM Janez Janša and Mr Metzger devoted special attention to intercultural dialogue. On this occasion the Chief Rabbi supported the Slovenian initiative for a planned Euro-Mediterranean University with a seat in Piran. He expressed the wish that Jewish academics would also actively participate in the project. Prime Minister Janez Janša and Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, both supporting the peace efforts undertaken by the international community.
