I welcome the victory of Nicolas Sarkozy at the presidential elections in France. The French voters have selected their President after a lively and productive debate which also focused on certain issues relevant to the common future of the EU. The election of Nicolas Sarkozy promises constructive changes with regard to France's position on some of the key aspects of the common European future. The French voters also deserve all congratulations on the high turnout, proving that the citizens of the French Republic care for both their and the common European future.

France is Slovenia's major partner in Euro-Atlantic organisations and in the Mediterranean. Both countries will have an important role in 2008, when Slovenia hands over the EU presidency to France at the end of June. That time will entail close collaboration in finding the best solutions for the common European future.
